R U OK Day. A reminder to check in on those around you
R U OK Day is an initiative that encourages individuals, communities and workplaces to feel empowered in connecting with those around them and supporting those who are struggling. R U OK’s national survey for 2019 found that almost 1 in 2 Australians would feel more comfortable starting a conversation with someone they care about, if they knew the signs to look for.
R U OK suggests carefully observing the following:
What they say? – do they seem:
- Confused
- Moody
- Lonely
- Irrational
What do they do? – are they:
- Experiencing mood swings
- Withdrawing
- Unable to concentrate
- Changing their behaviour
- Acting reckless
- Losing interest in what they used to love
What is going on in their life? – are they experiencing:
- Relationship breakdowns
- Health issues
- Loss of someone they care about
- Work pressure
- Financial difficulty
If you notice any other the above, or any other changes in anyone you care about, check in with them. Take this reminder to check in with you family, children, colleagues and friends. The following steps may help you know where to start.
